We piled the Funky bunch into the truck at 6am and headed off for Short Hills. It was a eerily quiet ride. Everyone was sleepy and lacking in the caffeine department. Thank goodness for The Coffee Mill Roasters on Main Street! They brewed us the most delicious Smatra mandheling coffee that finally put a little spring in our step. It was a very chilly morning, but we managed to get everything set up in record time.

Here we are right after the Fair started. Look at that smiling face on Chuck! We don’t know if he was freezing to death or just that happy.

We want to send out a big thank you to the people of the Short Hills/Millburn area. We had a wonderful time and met so many new friends and fans! Thanks for an amazing day.

Of course since this was our first outing of the season we all went home exhausted. The first one always drains the life right out of us! The good thing is that we have 2 weeks to recover before we head to the Red Bank Farmers Market. We are very excited to get the chance to meet so many of our customers face to face. It’s going to be a wonderful season! 

Our first outing of the year is on April 21st, 2013 at the Milburn/Short Hills Street Fair. We will be there from 11 am to 5 pm

And now for the big announcement and the one we are most excited about!

Starting May 12th (Mother’s Day) and running until mid November we will be calling the Red Bank Farmers Market our home. You will be able to find us there every Sunday from 9 am to 2 pm. The Market is located at The Galleria in Red Bank at the corners of Bridge Avenue and West Front Street. We have very close ties to the Red Bank area and can’t wait for the season to begin!

We will have all of your favorite Funky Chunks soaps there every week…and weekly specials and promotions that we will announce on our Facebook page. All in all it’s going to be a exciting fun filled season for us here at Funky Chunks and we hope that you will come along for the ride!

This past spring the Production and Marketing Team at The Funky Chunks Soap Company were sitting at a local diner in NJ getting ready to talk business and have breakfast when the waitress came over to take our order. While plates of eggs, bacon, omelettes and pancakes started flying around, one of us (the one team member who always goes against the grain) stated boldly, “You know what….I’m gonna have a good old Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich!.”

The entire table gave an enthusiastic “WOW! What a great idea.” To which a few of us gladly followed suit and changed our order to PB&J’s. The only element differing between us was our choice of many flavored jelly offerings (of course “Jam Offerings” if you are from the UK).

The conversation went off course for the next 20 minutes and was about how much each of us loved PB&J sandwiches. The memories those flavors evoked, did our moms cut the crusts off when we were kids? Did we use butter or not?, Did we put the peanut butter on one side and the jelly on the other and then mash the two pieces of bread together? Did we make our sandwiches triple-decker? We all agreed that we loved those sandwiches so much and would love to eat them, heck, to even just smell that combination every day. Basically, nostalgia or not, adults LOVE peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

Being that the entire staff is always internet connected, we went on our IPhones, Droids, and IPads surfing around looking for information on PB&J sandwiches. The blog LJ World.com - http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2009/nov/09/pbj-us/ - gave some great info and statistics about the sandwich in their post “PB&J In The USA” (November 9, 2009). The blog stated at that time that the National Peanut Board reported the average American will eat more than 1,500 PB&J sandwiches by the time he or she graduates from high school – AND – that the combo was actually being slated as the All American Sandwich rivalling the hamburger! What’s more, Americans at that time consumed more than 700 million pounds of peanut butter each year, about 3.5 pounds per person per year.

Then it happened! Our Soapstress Michele stated that she thought she could make those smells come alive in our soaps. The rest of our breakfast meeting was dedicated to creating and marketing a Peanut Butter and Jelly soap. A couple days and a few experimental batches of soap later…The Funky Chunks PB&J (with Raspberry Jelly) was born and samples went out to our staff and testers to which the response was pure elation! You've been eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches all of your life...now you can take a shower with one too!
